UMPQUA BANK SAN FRANCISCO FLAGSHIP

A Northwest Bank Creates a Splash in Downtown San Francisco

For its new San Francisco flagship, a new store concept was created based upon hospitality, community, and access to information and productive workspaces. The result was a high-touch, Portland flavored, San Francisco focused store.

Umpqua's challenge: how does a bank remain relevant in a rapidly changing marketplace? And how does an iconic Oregon-based brand gain traction in a highly competitive and new market in California? The solution was multi-layered.

First, hospitality—a hallmark of Umpqua's approach to customer service—was embraced and programmed into the space. The concierge desk was located at the heart of the store and staffed by a Universal Associate, capable of handling most of the services provided by the bank.

Second, the design embraced the community by providing vehicles to convey locally relevant information like bus schedules and weather forecasts. It also gave prominent real estate to the Local Spotlight, an approachable area where local businesses could be featured and provided teaching moments through Umpqua sponsored after hours events.

Third, several areas were designed for learning and convenience. The Spark Resource Center contained iPads with changing subscription content. Charging stations were strategically placed for customer use. Several meeting rooms were available for use-for both customers and visitors.

Finally, the store embraced its location and history adjacent to the old San Francisco mint. The idea of currency—of ideas, wealth, and community—acted as a repeating design theme. The familiar woodblock mural was printed on round wood disks and metallic circle patterns lived as a graphic veneer throughout the space. The resulting bank won International Store of the Year from the RDI (Retail Designers Institute) in 2014.
